There has been a Catholic church on the shores of Black Lake for well over a century. The early church was a simple wooden structure dedicated to the honor and patronage of St. Michael which served the faithful well and eventually gave in to the wear of years. During the early 1940s the wooden structure was replaced with concrete blocks.
The pews were given to the new church from the Catholic Church in Hodge, Louisiana, which had just remodeled and declared the seats surplus. These seats are still in use today. The new church was dedicated to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary.
At first, missionaries visited the faithful only monthly. But “neither wind, nor rain,” could keep these temporary priests from their appointed rounds. The first permanent priest, Fr. Plugs, was assigned to the parish in the mid-1940s. A community hall was added soon after the new church and a cemetery in 1979. The church now has a membership of approximately 40 families and a large contingent of sportsmen who drop in on us when the weather is right.
All in all, the parish looks forward to a long and healthy labor for the Lord.
