St. Joseph

History

St. Joseph’s Church was started as a Mission of St. John Baptist Catholic Church, Cloutierville during the period between 1880-1890. When St. Joseph’s was established Rev. Jean Marie Beaulieu, pastor of St. John the Baptist Church began to minister to the Catholics of Colfax by crossing  the river by ferry from time to time.

St. Joseph’s was made a Mission of Alexandria 1906-08 and was taken care of by Rev. L Menard. He worked hard to establish churches and chapels throughout the diocese. St. Joseph was established during the time of Bishop Antoine Durier, who was the 3rd bishop of Natchitoches.

Through the perseverance of the Catholic faithful, the church building was completed in January 1893 on a piece of farm land donated by Capt. C.H. Teal. In 1897, St. Joseph’s was officially dedicated as a parish by Bishop Durier. The first Rectory was built in 1910 by the side of the church and the first resident priest there was Rev. J.M. Blaine. Rev. William Lambertz, from Germany succeeded him. In 1934 he handed it over to Rev. M. Maure from Hessmer.

May 29, 1936 was the start of a levee at the corner of St. Joseph’s church property causing it to be moved from 2nd to 3rd street. From 1943-45, Rev. Vincent G. Couvillion served St. Joseph’s. He was responsible for extensive renovations both in and out including the installation of the brick veneer.

In 1947, Most Rev. Charles P. Greco, Bishop of Alexandria gave St. Joseph’s parish and missions to the Fathers of the Precious Blood. The Fathers also brought 3 teaching nuns to Colfax. The year 1949 marked the establishment of Missions such as St. Edward’s at Fishville, St. Patrick’s at Montgomery and St. Rose’s at Aloha.
